White Plains Men’s Summer Basketball League Returns, Moves to New Venues

WHITE PLAINS, NY — White Plains will bring back its Adult Men's Summer Basketball League this year.

Games are scheduled from Aug. 5 through Sept. 3 at larger venues outside Gardella Park. The city announced July 27 that regular season games will be played on indoor courts at SUNY Purchase and the Theodore D. Young Community Center in Greenburgh, with playoff and championship games at SUNY Purchase.

According to the city, the league has grown over the last four decades and attracted fans from across the region. The announcement said the tournament had outgrown the courts at Gardella Park and that the increase in attendance had become a strain on the Ferris Avenue neighborhood. White Plains said it partnered with nearby communities to move the games to locations better equipped to handle parking, noise and clean-up needs.

"The city's annual basketball league, sometimes locally called Ferris World Ball, is a terrific event, and we know how important it is to our community," said White Plains Mayor Justin Brasch. "We are thrilled to have found locations excited to partner with us to host league play this year. The move ensures that basketball fans can keep watching these talented players on the court."

White Plains Public Safety Commissioner Wade Hardy said the shift became necessary as the league expanded.

"As Ferris Avenue's Adult Basketball League has grown, transitioning to venues with greater capacity than Gardella Park became necessary," Hardy said. "We are proud of the tournament's success and look forward to seeing the high-level play it is known for resume this year in locations which will better serve the players and the public."

The city said the courts at the Theodore D. Young Community Center and SUNY Purchase will allow more fans to attend because of added infrastructure and parking. For games at the Theodore D. Young Community Center, visitors should go to 32 Manhattan Ave., park in the main lot and check in at the front desk. For games at SUNY Purchase, visitors should go to 735 Anderson Hill Rd., park off East Loop in Lot East 6, with overflow parking in Lot East 3, and head to the Physical Education Building on the second floor.

The city also said the High School Basketball League is already underway, with six teams playing Monday and Wednesday evenings at Gardella Park. Its championship game will also be held at Gardella Park later in August. The annual Gardella Family Day is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 9, with music, food and activities beginning at 5 p.m. More information about the Summer Basketball League is available at 914-422-1336.
