NYACK, NY — Justice will be served in a a more than five year old slaying in Rockland County.
A Nyack man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and weapons charges in connection with the 2021 shooting in Spring Valley that left one man dead, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced.
"This guilty plea holds the defendant accountable for taking the life of Olgalito Nerette through senseless gun violence," Walsh said. "Our office remains committed to holding accountable those who illegally possess and use firearms in our communities and to seeking justice for victims and their families."
Kevin Castillo, 25, pleaded guilty on Sept. 18 to manslaughter in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the March 2021 shooting death of Olgalito Nerette.
As part of his guilty plea, Castillo admitted that on March 26, 2021, near Monsey Boulevard and Fletcher Road, he possessed a loaded and operable pistol without a permit or license. He also admitted that, intending to cause Nerette serious physical injury, he fired the gun at him, killing him,
Under the plea agreement, Castillo will be sentenced to 17 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision for the manslaughter conviction. He will also receive a concurrent 10-year prison sentence followed by five years of post-release supervision on the weapons conviction.
Castillo is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 22.
