Bites Nearby: Golden Wok Chinese Restaurant

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, New Rochelle Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out.

What family doesn’t have a favorite Chinese restaurant they turn to when a sit-down or take-out Chinese meal is desired?

For the former, if you have one, please let me know where it is because I haven’t found one locally for years. For the latter, many families turn to Golden Wok on the corner of French Ridge and Webster Avenue.

Golden Wok is Chinese take-out the way it should be: fast and delicious. With an eclectic menu that has something for everyone, ordering from Golden Wok will not disappoint. General Tso’s Chicken, a dish said to have been introduced to the New York City area in the early ‘70s, provides diners with a welcome respite from traditional fare and remains one of the most popular dishes on any Chinese menu. Here, the dish is sweet and crispy with portions generous enough for two diners. The broccoli that accompanies the dish is made al dente and, as a result, cooked to a brilliant green that is delightfully crisp to the bite.

One frequent Golden Wok customer is passionate about the restaurant and posted his feelings on Yelp, “…I love this place. I grew up three blocks away from here and have to say they have excellent service. The food is always fresh and tasty. They deliver in minutes and provide a great product. Now that I'm on the other side of the city, I still only order Chinese from one place and that is Golden Wok.”

Menu offerings include a wide selection of seafood, beef, chicken, pork and vegetable dishes. The number of appetizers and house specials is in double digits as is the number of soups and chef’s specials.

A Yahoo reviewer describes his favorite: “The food is really good, and the chicken wings are outstanding. Lunch specials are all served with fried or steamed rice, wonton or egg drop soup or soda and an egg roll. Szechuan beef, string beans with garlic sauce and chicken with broccoli are a few of the dishes offered for lunch, and with prices ranging from $4.85 to $5.55, these specials qualify as first-class bargains. Lunch specials are served until 4 p.m.”

Golden Wok fans exist for more reasons other than just the food. A diner visiting from Chicago shared on Yelp: “Only Chinese delivery place I've tried in the New Rochelle area that delivers their food packaged in those nice (reusable) PLASTIC CONTAINERS. Score! I totally needed Tupperware.”

With a sidewalk level entrance, Golden Wok scores additional points for being wheelchair accessible. Menus come complete with coupons for free items with purchase. Says one happy customer on Yelp: “Extreme heat, severe blizzards, monsoons ... nothing can stop Golden Wok's delivery guys from getting you your order in a timely fashion.”  

And nothing should stop you from ordering from Golden Wok. With four large tables on site, dining in is also an option.
