The College of New Rochelle: Blue Angels Sweeps HVIAC Weekly Volleyball Awards

Fabiola Padilla Rios and Melanie Lopez Soto have earned HVIAC Player and Rookie of the Week accolades, respectively.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The College of New Rochelle swept the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Weekly Volleyball Honors, it was announced today by the conference office. Fabiola Padilla Rios (San Juan, PR) and Melanie Lopez Soto (Gurabo, PR) have earned Player and Rookie of the Week accolades, respectively.

Padilla Rios, who was named Rookie of the Week each of the last two weeks, helped lead the Blue Angels to a 4-0 week, with all four wins coming in straight sets. The College of New Rochelle’s win streak now stands at eight, with the last seven all by 3-0 score lines. On the week, the rookie hit at a .360 clip, slamming home a team-high 46 kills (3.83 kills/set). She showcased her defensive abilities as well, averaging 3.42 digs per set, while her total of 41 digs for the week paced the team. The outside hitter posted match-highs in kills in each of the team’s four matches. Against York (NY) College, she hit at a .467 clip, she posted double-doubles against John Jay College and The King’s College (with her dig totals being match-highs as well), and she closed out the week with a 15 kill performance in the three set win over Bay Path College.

Lopez Soto has played a key role in the Blue Angels’ success this year, and she tallied 59 assists, 33 digs, and 12 aces over CNR’s perfect week. From her setter position in the team’s 6-2, Lopez Soto tallied a double-double in the win over York (NY) College, handing out a match-high 14 assists to go along with a match-high 10 digs, adding three kills (against no attack errors) and one ace. In the win over John Jay College, she again led the team with 12 assists, this time adding a match-high seven aces. Another double-double was tallied in the HVIAC win over The King’s College, as the rookie recorded match-highs with 20 assists and 11 digs. She rounded out the week, with a 12 assist, seven dig, three kill (against no attack errors), two ace performance in the win over Bay Path College.

The Blue Angels put their win streak on the line tonight, hosting the College of Mt. St. Vincent at the Wellness Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. Follow with LIVE STATS.
