Capoeira Martial Arts For Kids Comes To The New Rochelle Library

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The library is calling New Rochelle kids on the mat and giving them a chance to improve body and mind while having a good time.

The New Rochelle Public Library announced that it is offering an introduction to the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira for children ages 3 to 11 years, beginning this Saturday.

Workshops will be divided by age. Children ages 3-5 years will meet from 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., while children ages 6- 11 years will meet from 11 a.m. - noon, for seven sessions: March 25, April 1, 15, 22, 19, May 6 and 13.

The program will culminate with a performance by both age groups on May 20, at 11 a.m.

The martial art form is much more than just a fighting style.

Organizers say Capoeira is disguised as a dance and performed to musical instruments and traditional Brazilian songs. The children will have the chance to develop greater strength, balance, rhythm and agility while practicing kicks, ducks, spins, and other basic offensive and defensive Capoeira movements. Instructors say the kids will be in constant motion in a workshop that is both fun and interactive.

"Capoeira is an excellent activity for kids that helps develop a wide variety of skills from flexibility and balance to focus and coordination," Head of Children’s Services Bobby Simic said. "We’re excited to bring this new program to the community, which is made possible through the generosity of The Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library."

This program is free and open to all, on a first come, first served basis. However, space may be limited.

Participants may attend any or all sessions. Classes will take place in the Ossie Davis Theater at the New Rochelle Public Library, located at 1 Library Plaza.
