City Manager Abruptly Resigns 'To Pursue Other Opportunities'

New Rochelle City Manager Kathleen Gill took the helm from longtime City Manager Chuck Strome who retired in December of 2022.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Kathleen Gill's nearly three decades of public service in the the City of New Rochelle officially came to an end this week.

At a Special Session of the New Rochelle City Council, the council voted to approve New Rochelle City Manager Kathleen Gill’s resignation. City Manager Gill’s last day was effective as of Tuesday.

"Kathleen Gill has submitted her letter of resignation in order to pursue other opportunities," New Rochelle Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert said in a statement officially announcing the move. "She is grateful for her 27 years of service to the City of New Rochelle and is proud to have worked with so many hard-working and dedicated City employees. We thank Kathleen for her service to the City of New Rochelle and wish her the best in her future endeavors."

Although Gill's departure became official this week, the move was widely expected by readers of "Talk of the Sound." The outlet has reported that Gill was being forced out of her position by a bloc of elected officials. Patch has not independently confirmed those reports.

Gill was first employed by the city in 1995 as Assistant Corporation Counsel, promoted to Deputy Corporation Counsel in 1996, Corporation Counsel in 2009, Chief of Staff in 2015 and Deputy City Manager months before being appointed to replace Strome as New Rochelle City Manager.

While the circumstances surrounding Gill's departure remain murky, Mayor Ramos-Herbert promised a "comprehensive and transparent search process to identify the next City Manager."

The city will tap an executive search firm to conduct a nationwide search. Ramos-Herbert said that search will start right away.

Per city charter, Deputy City Manager Adam Salgado will serve as Acting City Manager until a new city manager is appointed.
