Coastal Flood Advisory For LI Sound Shore, Road Closures Likely: NWS

Breaking: 1-2 feet of flooding expected. Cars parked near the water may be flooded. Flooding may extend inland along tidal rivers and bays.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for southern Westchester County, southern Fairfield County, the Bronx, Northwest Suffolk and Northern Nassau counties from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The NWS said there could be one to two feet of inundation above ground level. The areas vulnerable to flooding are expected to be limited to land near the shoreline.

Widespread minor coastal flooding could affect some roads and low-lying properties, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront.

Road closures will be likely. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding could also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

The coastal flooding concerns come as the remnants of Ian continue to batter the Northeast. "The storm was a shell of its former Category 4 self, but it still was making a mess of things across parts of the eastern U.S," according to AccuWeather.

The NWS said that travelers in the affected areas are advised to allow extra time to reach their destinations. Motorists are warned not to drive around barricades or through any water on the roadway of unknown depth.

Homeowners and businesses should take measures to protect flood-prone property.
