NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle will be shutting its doors after the summer 2019 semester and has reached an agreement with Mercy College to give students a "seamless transition" to continue their education. A post on CNR's website Tuesday said that the arrangement with Mercy will provide CNR students the opportunity to automatically transfer to Mercy for the fall 2019 semester and will be able to continue their education uninterrupted.

"Often when a college closes, its students are forced to find their own path forward in their education, frequently losing credit for courses they have taken," CNR President William Latimer and Board Interim Chairwoman Marlene Tutera said in the post, "finding themselves in a new environment with new faculty, and extending the time it takes to earn their degree.

"We were determined not to allow that to happen for our students," they said.

Latimer and Tutera said that, with the finalization of the agreement, the CNR board of trustees has decided that the college will "cease operations by the conclusion of the summer 2019 semester at the latest."

An exact date for closure will be announced once the determination has been made.

While this was not the outcome Latimer and Tutera said they had hoped for regarding the future of CNR, "we can take solace in the fact that this is not a reflection of the quality academics that CNR offers nor the impact this college has had on so many communities and for so many individuals for the past 115 years."

The College of New Rochelle found itself in a difficult financial situation in October 2016 and was, at times, days away from shutting its doors.

Then-President Judith Huntington resigned, and "unmet financial obligations" were uncovered and presented to the trustees.

About $20 million in payroll taxes had not been paid for eight quarters, beginning in 2014.
