Her first novel, Then She Found Me, became a 2008 feature film, directed by and starring Helen Hunt, with Bette Midler, Colin Firth, and Matthew Broderick. She was the 2011-12 Elizabeth Drew professor of creative writing at Smith College, and winner of the New England Bookseller Award and the Paterson Fiction Prize. Her book reviews and essays have appeared in the Washington Post, Boston Globe and The New York Times, including two "Modern Love" essays. She divides her time between Manhattan and the Hudson Valley.
Lipman’s latest book, Ms. Demeanor (2022), has been described by writer Wally Lamb as ‘A deliciously entertaining story whose ingredients include wit, sass, sex, and social satire. One of her best.’
The Wall Street Journal observed "[Lipman] has long been one of our wittiest chroniclers of modern-day romance,” while The New York Times noted that “Over the course of a dozen novels, readers of Elinor Lipman’s fiction have come to expect charm and clever high jinks.” New York Jewish Week calls Lipman “a writer to savor. Her wit is at once light and serious, ringing with humanity, and her tangled plots are full of surprises...Her writing is reminiscent of the late, fine writer Laurie Colwin."
