Cuomo 'Proud' of Obama's Support for Gay Marriage

Governor Andrew Cuomo is proud of President Barack Obama's voiced support for marriage equality.

Speaking after a press conference Thursday at the , the first-term Democratic governor said he really believed the president's views on the issue changed over time, rather than just finally admitting the truth.

During an interview recorded Wednesday for ABC News, Obama told Robin Roberts that gays and lesbians should have access to the same civil rights as heterosexual couples. 

"Many people evolved on this issue," Cuomo said. "If you posed the same question 20 years ago to people in this state—Do you think there should be marriage equality?—my guess is overwhelming the answer would have been no."

For the governor today, "the answer is yes. I've evolved on this issue," he said. "No doubt about it."

In June, New York became the sixth state in the union to allow same-sex marriage when the state Senate passed a bill with bipartisan support. Cuomo was a strong and vocal advocate for the change.
