Drugs and Weapons Charges Leveled at Texan Arrested in New Rochelle

The man was stopped for a traffic violation but didn't have a valid driver's license or his name on the car's rental agreement.

A Texas man was arrested in New Rochelle on drugs and weapons charges Thursday.

The Westchester County Police said Jose Ramirez, 35, of Bowie, TX was stopped on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway near Webster Avenue in New Rochelle for a traffic violation.

He was driving a rented 2016 Hyundai Sonata. He did not have a valid driver’s license and his name was not on the sedan’s rental agreement.

County Police Officer Christian Gutierrez said he detected a strong odor of marijuana in the car.

After Ramirez was taken into custody, Gutierrez and his partner Jax, a narcotics detection canine, searched the vehicle and allegedly found a loaded handgun inside a duffle bag and 13 ounces of marijuana inside a plastic container hidden near a wheel well in the trunk.

Ramirez was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of marijuana, both felonies, and criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor.

He was arraigned in New Rochelle City Court and ordered held without bail at the Westchester County Jail.
