NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Long before there was Legoland, before there was even a Disney World and before Times Square became a family-friendly tourist trap, there was a brief moment in time when nearby Freedomland U.S.A felt like the very center of the universe.

Mike Virgintino, the author of Freedomland USA: The Definitive History will present the history of the famous park in the Ossie Davis Theater at the New Rochelle Public Library this Saturday, at 2 p.m.

Freedomland U.S.A., located where Co-op City is now in the Bronx, was once known as the "Disneyland of the East." While it only lasted from 1960-1964, the park still generates fond memories among the baby boomers who had the chance to enjoy its American history-themed attractions.

"Freedomland U.S.A. is both New York City history and a significant portion of America’s theme park history," Virgintino explained. "America never had seen anything like it and we certainly never will see it duplicated. It was conceived to tell the story, in an entertaining way, of America’s history. Today’s parks, with a few exceptions, are built solely for thrills."
