New Rochelle- Youth from the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle will take over the New Rochelle City Hall on Monday, April 8th, part of its 90th annual Civics Day and kickoff to National Boys & Girls Club Week. The annual event, sponsored by the Club in conjunction with the Youth Bureau and the City of New Rochelle, will give 20 Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle members an opportunity to learn about leadership positions at City Hall including Mayor, City Manager, Commissioners, City Council, City Clerk, City Judge, Court Clerk and Corporation Council. Past Civics Day participants include Jimmy Generoso, the current Court Clerk and William Iannuzzi, the current Director of the Mascaro Boys & Girls Club.

Children meet in front of City Hall for a Memorial Wreath Ceremony which recognizes all of the public servants who have passed away. The event moves inside to the Council Chambers where the Mayor and other City officials meet their youth counterparts and share information about the responsibilities of their position. The Mayor swears each youth in, and the children take over City Hall. Whether its riding in a police car, going into the jail, or sitting in the Mayor’s Chair, the children shadow City officials to see what exactly they do. The event finishes with a luncheon at the Remington Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle where the youth Mayor reads recommendations made by the youth City Council members to the adult City Hall officials.

The schedule for events is as follow:

  • 9:00am- Memorial Wreath Laying in Front of City Hall
  • 9:15am- Swearing in Ceremony Council Chambers
  • 10am- Noon- Children Assume the Leadership of the City for a Morning!
    • Youth Council members develop recommendations for City Administration
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm- Luncheon at Remington Clubhouse- 116 Guion Place, New Rochelle, NY 10801
