Misty Copeland Visit To New Rochelle HS Raises The Ballet Barre

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Part of the job of educating the next generation is inspiring students to accomplish what their parents might never have dreamed possible — the New Rochelle High School furthered this mission with flying colors, thanks to a role model who has changed the world of dance and created joy in the process.

Misty Copeland made a visit to New Rochelle High School on Friday, sharing the story of her road to becoming the first Black woman to be promoted to the position of American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer in the company's 75-year history in 2015.

Copeland's story began when she discovered ballet while living in a shabby motel room, struggling with her five siblings for a place to sleep on the floor. Quickly recognized as a prodigy, she was dancing en pointe within three months of taking her first dance class and performing professionally in just over a year.

Copeland's natural gifts didn't keep her from having to confront engrained misconceptions about race, outright prejudice and a stubborn resistance to change. These challenges might help open doors for future prima ballerinas, scientists and leaders in the audience.

The community event featured a talk with Copeland. She stuck around after to sign autographs and met with students and staff one-on-one, according to event organizers.

Copeland is the author of several books, most recently "Black Ballerinas: My Journey To Our Legacy.”
