WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Con Edison said Thursday that the estimated time for electricity to be restored to all its Westchester customers is 11 p.m. Aug. 10. Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said he was on a conference call with Con Ed management and Westchester municipal officials during which the power company indicated that most customer will have power back by Sunday.
However, he said they also mentioned that there will be others who will not get their lights turned on until sometime next week.
"Con Ed should have had crews from out of state available as soon as they heard that a storm was coming to our area," Feiner said in an email to the community. "Every time there is an outage the same thing happens: Con Ed is blamed for being unprepared. NYS conducts an investigation. And the next time there is a major storm the same thing happens."
Westchester County Executive George Latimer, at a news conference Thursday morning, said there was no question that everyone knew the tropical storm was coming.
"It surprised us as to the severity of it," he said.
Latimer said there needs to be information from the utility company conveyed to local governments in a timely fashion.
He said he wasn't being accusatory but people need a reasonable idea when the power will come back on.
Having the company say everyone will be back online by next Tuesday is a "vague way of saying I'm not going to specific," because they might be held to that, Latimer said.
In a news release at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, a spokesperson for Con Edison said a fresh shift of 1,000 employees, including 460 utility contractors and mutual aid workers, will continue "assessing damage, providing site safety, restoring power and clearing trees and downed wires."
Dry ice will be distributed in Westchester County at Yorktown Food Emporium, 355 Downing Drive, Yorktown Heights, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at New Rochelle City Hall, rear parking lot, 515 North Ave., from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.
At 2:15 p.m., Yonkers had 8,260 customers with no electricity; Yorktown, 3,240; North Castle, 3,239; New Rochelle, 6,636, New Castle 3,982 and Mount Vernon, 3,248.
