New Rochelle HS Could Be Closed Until November

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle High School won't be safe for students' return until October, at the earliest, district officials told families Wednesday night.

New Rochelle High School took "substantial damage" from flooding associated with Post-Tropical Cyclone Ida. Flooring, walls, electrical and mechanical systems, including the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems were damaged. On Friday, administrators announced that the high school building will not open on Sept. 10, as planned.

“While this is disappointing news, the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff are our top priority," Superintendent Jonathan Raymond said in a statement announcing the unanticipated back to school changes. "We know these delays impact many families, and our teams at our schools and across our district will work as hard as possible to ensure a positive learning experience for our students and reopen our high school as soon as possible.”

Raymond told parents at the virtual town hall that the school could remain closed until November. He said in addition to substantial water damage, a sewer backup made portions of the building unsafe to use. Asbestos remediation will also be required in some areas.

Raymond said that starting classes remotely is not the ideal solution. He told familes that he is actively seeking an alternative location that can accomodate classrooms.

Meanwhile, Isaac E. Young Middle School also sustained floor and wall damage. The less severe water damage at this building is being repaired. District officials said the school will be cleaned and disinfected and "will be safe and healthy for students and staff." The middle school, which was scheduled to open Friday, Sept. 10, will now open Monday, Sept. 13, instead.
