New Rochelle Reopens Restroom at Train Station

One restroom will be opened Thursday on a single-user, unisex basis until the other facility can be repaired.

Good news for New Rochelle commuters who have to go while on the go.

The City of New Rochelle will reopen one of the restrooms at the city-owned train station Thursday.

The men's restroom will be open on a single-user, unisex basis from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., seven days a week.

The ladies bathroom requires about $20,000 worth of repairs before it can be reopened.

City Manager Charles Strome said negotiations with Metro-North Railroad have led to the agency offering to have the restroom patrolled by MTA Police at least once a day. The agency will also contribute to the replacement of restroom fixtures.

The restrooms were closed to the public Jan. 15 due to costs associated with vandalism.

Normal maintenance on the facilities usually costs $25,000 per year. Last year, because of vandalism, the cost was $53,000.

The city and Metro-North will also discuss working together to market the railroad station more effectively to commercial tenants, using Metro-North's contacts and marketing services.
