New Rochelle School Board Passes Resolution Opposing DeVos as Education Secretary

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — At a special meeting Friday, the Board of Education for the City School District of New Rochelle passed a resolution opposing the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education of the United States.

DeVos’s confirmation vote before a Senate committee is scheduled to take place on Jan. 31.

According to a spokesman, the resolution reads “… until such time as the Trump administration presents a formal vision for the future of public education in the United States of America that supports the success of all students, (the board) will continue to oppose such a nomination.”

The board’s resolution states that DeVos is a candidate lacking “any formal credentials as an educator, experience in the administration and management of public schools.”

The resolution further adds that DeVos demonstrates a “pre-disposition towards and long-history of support for school voucher programs, which by their very nature challenge our steadfast belief that all schools should be fully supported and funded to provide each and every student access to a high quality education regardless of their place of residence or socio-economic status.”

The resolution additionally calls upon the United States Senate to oppose DeVos’s nomination and confirm a candidate better suited to serve as Secretary of Education.
