NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle schools superintendent will be taking a leave of absence beginning Sept. 3. Superintendent Dr. Laura Feijóo said, in a letter to the community Thursday, that she would be taking a leave due to having to undergo surgery.

"Although it appears that my recovery time should be brief, it is anticipated that I will not be available to perform my duties for approximately two weeks," she said.

Feijóo said it was a difficult decision to make, but it was unavoidable.

"It was my strong desire to delay this procedure as I understand and appreciate my absence comes at a difficult time, however, given the circumstances and upon the advice of my doctor, I could not delay the surgery," she said.

Dr. Alex Marrero, the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, will be appointed by the board of education to serve as acting superintendent during Feijóo's absence.
