NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Because it serves what is considered a population vulnerable to the new coronavirus, the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center in New Rochelle has been closed until further notice. A notice on the city's website said that some of its services to seniors will continue.

On Wednesday, center staff will be identifying seniors in need of support services, including meals.

The center will also continue providing transportation from senior buildings of Willow Towers, Maple Center and Maple Place to supermarkets and medical appointments.

The closing comes in the wake of the announcement that the state imposed a 1-mile radius containment area in New Rochelle to help hinder the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Young Israel of New Rochelle synagogue was used as the center point of the zone, because a congregant of the house of worship — a 50-year-old New Rochelle man — was the second person in the state to test positive for the virus.

The majority of positive cases in the state are connected to the man, his family and others in the immediate area.

Also, at the state's direction, nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the New Rochelle area will not be permitted to accept visitors until further notice. The move is designed to safeguard vulnerable senior residents.
