New Rochelle to Consider Changes to Two One-Way Streets

The city is trying to help motorists get around New Rochelle's downtown area, specifically getting to the parking facilities.

To that end, the City Council will vote May 21 whether to change Lawton Street and the portion of Church Street between Main Street and Clinton Place from one-way streets to two-way.

During the May 14 Council Meeting, Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon said this was a result of a study commissioned by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District.

He said Memorial Highway, between Main and Huguenot streets was also studied, but because it is a state roadway, changing it to two-way access will not be considered at this time.

On Lawton, the direction of the slanted parking spots will be reoriented and one space will be gained, according to Ralph DiBart, the executive director of the BID.

Speed humps will be added on Lawton at entrances to the municipal parking lots.
