New York spent more money on its schools than any other state, according to the survey. But being among the top-ranked schools in terms of spending doesn't always translate into success.

"There are a variety of factors that influence school spending," explained Thomas Ramming, WalletHub analyst and Clinical Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education. "Attempting to explain the variation in school quality based on spending is simplistic and generally not supported by research."
