You might be surprised at which Sound Shore town made the list of the very best beach towns in the Empire State.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Summer vacation has already started for several students across the U.S. and for those of us lucky enough to live in a coastal region, getting to the beach doesn't require a trip to the airport — some of us don't even need to leave town to enjoy the best beach experiences in the state.
According to a new report, New Rochelle is one of the best beach towns in the Empire State.
In order to determine the best beach towns in New York, Stacker based its rankings on a number of factors weighted by importance: number of beaches with water quality monitored through the BEACH Act, the total shoreline of those beaches, access to beach-related businesses based on Census Bureau County Business Patterns, and Zillow median home prices.

To be considered a beach town, each city needed to have at least one beach on the EPA's National List of Beaches, which includes only beaches that are used recreationally and are open to the public for free or for a fee.
There are 291 beaches monitored by the EPA in New York, with a total of 90.4 miles of shoreline.

Coming in at No. 5 on the list was New Rochelle, which earned its spot on Stacker's list for having a total of 9 beaches and 3.6 miles of listed beachfront. The average swim season length is 102 days in the Queen City on the Sound, with an average county summer temperatue of 75 degrees. The median home price in New Rochelle is $755,263.
