Slippery Leaves Causing Fewer Metro-North Delays Tuesday: UPDATE

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — As of around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, only the New Haven Line is still experiencing delays. Metro North said there are 5 to 10 minute delays and that customers should still listen for announcements at their stations.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Slippery rail conditions are causing delays on all Metro-North lines Tuesday. The New Haven, Hudson and Harlem lines are all experiencing 10- to 15-minute delays, the railroad said.

Falling leaves and wet conditions because of storms moving through the region are the causes.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently announced the beginning of the leaf-fighting season when crews spray water jets to get rid of slimy leaf debris.

Fallen leaves that land on the running rails of the tracks are run over by trains and get compacted by the trains’ weight and crushed into a gelatinous, slime-like substance that reduces adhesion train wheels have on the rails.
