Special 'Councilwoman' Screening For Women's History Month
A panel discussion at the New Rochelle Library with Westchester leaders Liz Fried, Martha Lopez, Ruth Walter and Leilani Yizar-Reid follows.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle Public Library will conclude its popular "The Extraordinary Women Film Series" this Thursday, at 6 p.m., with the screening of "Councilwoman."
Following the screening, there will be a Q & A with New Rochelle Councilwoman Liz Fried, Councilwoman Martha Lopez, former County Legislator Ruth Walter and Mamaroneck Village Trustee Leilani Yizar-Reid, discussing their experiences running for and serving in their respective offices.
"Councilwoman" is a 2019 film that tells the inspiring story of Carmen Castillo, an immigrant Dominican housekeeper in a Providence hotel who wins a seat in City Council, taking her advocacy for low-income workers from the margins to city politics. The movie follows the first term of the Rhode Island councilwoman as she balances her day job as a hotel housekeeper with the demands of public office. The Margo Guernsey film is English/Spanish subtitled and runs 57 minutes.
