'Stay Home' Flash Flood Warning Issued: National Weather Service

Yonkers, New Rochelle, White Plains, Nanuet and Port Chester are mentioned in the emergency alert warning of "life threatening conditions."

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The National Weather Service is telling Westchester and Rockland County residents to stay home because of the likelihood of dangerous flash flooding.

UPDATE: The flash flood warning has been extended to 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

The weather alert triggered the use of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The flash flood warning issued by the agency says life-threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses is expected.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Yonkers, Nanuet, New Rochelle, White Plains, New City, Port Chester, Passaic, Wayne, Mott Haven, Bloomfield, East Tremont, Hackensack, Bergenfield, Paramus, West Milford, Ridgewood, Lyndhurst, Monsey, Rutherford and Patterson.

At 4:51 p.m., Doppler radar showed heavy rain across the area, triggering the emergency warning. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have fallen so far with additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches possible in the affected areas.

The flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, according to the NWS. The Warning remains in effect until 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

Motorists on the roadways are being advised to turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Statistically, most flood deaths occur in vehicles, according to weather service officials. Drivers are reminded to be aware of the surroundings and not drive on flooded roads.
