Traffic Stop on Hutch in New Rochelle Yields Seizure of 3.5 Kilos of Heroin

Police said the street value of the drugs was estimated at $100,000.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A Massachusetts man faces a felony drug possession charge after being stopped on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle with 3.5 kilos of heroin.

Westchester County police said Dennis Burgos, 45, of Springfield, MA, was stopped by Officer Christian Gutierrez on the northbound Hutch at Webster Avenue for a traffic violation around 1 p.m.

While speaking with Burgos, the officer noticed alterations to the interior of the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, indicating a possible hidden compartment had been installed.

Gutierrez brought his canine partner Jax, a narcotics detection dog, to the vehicle.

Jax indicated the presence of narcotics in the rear cargo area and Burgos was taken into custody for additional investigation.

The SUV was towed to headquarters and a warrant was obtained for a search.

Police said heroin was found in the place the canine officer indicated.

Street value of the heroin is estimated to be $100,000.

Burgos was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony.

He was arraigned Thursday in New Rochelle City Court and ordered held without bail at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla.

Gutierrez and Jax have been responsible for the seizure of other illegal drugs, including 4,500 Oxycodone and Percocet pills valued at $180,000.
