A View from the Bridge Wows Audiences at Westport Community Theatre

New Rochelle's Rich Masotti Contributes to First Production of WCT Season

A View from the Bridge, by American playwright Arthur Miller, continues its run at Westport Community Theatre, much to the delight of audiences, with performances through October 1st. John Atkin directs the WCT play produced by Cindy Hartog. New Rochelle resident Rich Massotti plays main character Eddie in the production.

The play is set in 1950s America, in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Eddie Carbone is attracted, nearly to the point of obsession, to Catherine, his wife Beatrice's orphaned niece, so he does not approve of her courtship by Beatrice's cousin Rodolfo. The action is narrated by Alfieri who was raised in 1900s Italy, but now working as an American lawyer.

Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of A View from the Bridge from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen and related it to him as a true story. A View from the Bridge opened on Broadway on September 29, 1955, at the Coronet Theatre, now the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, with Marilyn Monroe in the audience. Dustin Hoffman acted as assistant director and stage manager for a successful 1965 production of the play off-Broadway at the Sheridan Square Playhouse in New York City.
