Washington Ave To Become One-Way Street Near Columbus Elementary
Officials said in addition to making the street safer, the move will make room for a potential drop-off and pickup lane at the school.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle will test a plan to ease traffic congestion near Columbus Elementary, but it could take some getting used to for drivers.
The pilot program will change Washington Avenue to one-way in front of the school and Fifth Street will now become one-way between Washington Avenue and Union. The temporary changes go into effect beginning Feb. 25.
Washington Avenue will change to one-way westbound between Fifth and Sixth Streets, in front of Columbus Elementary School. Fifth Street will change to one-way southbound between Washington Avenue and Union Avenue.

The pilot program will test if the new traffic patterns reduce gridlock near the school and St. Joseph’s Church. Officials said the new restrictions will also hopefully improve pedestrian safety for students and make room for a potential drop-off and pickup lane at the school.
