2 Bicyclists Injured In Mattituck Crashes Saturday: Cops

One bicyclist was airlifted after a crash, police say. Do you think something needs to be done to make the roads safer for bicyclists?

MATTITUCK, NY — Two bicyclists were injured on the road in Mattituck Saturday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the first incident took place at 10:23 a.m. on Reeve Rd; a 63-year old male bicyclist was heading southbound near the intersection of East Mill Rd. when he collided with the rear passenger side of a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, which was also traveling southbound on Reeve Rd. The collision caused the bicyclist to crash and and lose consciousness, police said.

The bicyclist was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via Suffolk County Police aviation, police said.

Next, at 12:09 p.m. on Route 25 in Mattituck, a man, 68, of New York, NY, was driving a 2015 Subaru east alongside another man, 58, of Mineola, who was also heading east on a bicycle, police said.

The driver did not see the bicyclist and made a right turn in front of him, causing the cyclist to strike the passenger side of the vehicle, police said. The man fell off his bicycle, injuring his hand; Mattituck Fire Department responded and transported the bicyclist to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment, police said.
