2 Rescued From Sinking Vessel In Long Island Sound

The boat was sinking in 2' to 4' seas with a heavy west wind, police say.

PECONIC, NY — Two boaters were rescued after their vessel began to sink in the Long Island Sound Sunday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place off Cabots Woods Rd. in Peconic; police received a 911 call from a Alex Palencia, 37, of Baiting Hollow who said his vessel was sinking in the Long Island Sound. He told police that they had life jackets and were entering the water; conditions at the time included 2' to 4' seas with a heavy west wind at the time, police said.

A Southold Town Police bay constable was on patrol in Mattituck Creek and responded to the scene and with the help of police officers on shore, spotted the two in the water, police said.

They were brought onto the vessel and each was safely transported back by police to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's boat ramp at Matttiuck Inlet, police said.

The boaters refused medical attention; Sea Tow was contacted by the owner to help retrieve the boat, police said.
