#74: Soundview Restaurant is a Timeless Treasure of the North Fork
With a magnificent view overlooking the Sound, this place for scenic dining remains within a family with a passion for Greenport and it's surrounding area.
When you enter for the first time, you may not realize that you’re about to experience the sights, sounds, and rhythms of the Long Island Sound, wonderful food and drink and fun and friendly service. Returning customers already know about this authentic dining spot on Route 48 that has graced the North Fork so for so many years.
Jack Levin, who was born in 1909 in Greenport, was a self-made man due to his perseverance and hard work. First running the small yet infamous Jack’s Shack, after its closing Levin yearned to buy the Soundview Restaurant, which was built in 1949. He wanted to add it to his family business at the time, the Sound Shore Motel, which his wife, Donna, originally ran. Finally, in 1968, his dream came true.
Jack, now 102 years of age, still stops by the restaurant to visit his dedicated daughters, who have taken over the helm. Rachel Levin Murphy runs the Soundview Restaurant and her sister, Ellen Wilderleight, runs the Soundview Inn, keeping the block in the family.

"Our parents were always so good to us and gave us so much that it was only natural to continue to run the business," said Levin Murphy.
To carry the weight of the menu and to please the palates of its customers, Chef Nancy Santiago has been with the Soundview for 10 years and she continues to offer the Soundview's classic seafood cuisine along with just the right dash of modern flair. The complete menu includes non-seafood dishes as well.

THe owners buy fresh produce and seafood locally at places such as in East Marion, of Cutchogue, and of Peconic.
“We love our great community, so buying from local businesses is a huge deal as we try to give back as much as possible," Levin Murphy said.
Another way that Levin Murphy gives back is by running numerous fundraising events for animal rescue groups, schools and fire departments.
Soundview Restaurant is also ready to spread the important sense of family by bringing it back to the dinner table. Starting within the coming months, they will be offering "Sundays with Grandma and Grandpa".
For cocktail lovers, their drink menu is extensive and exciting. “Our drink list is to die for,” said Levin Murphy
While sitting on the outdoor deck, you'll feel nothing but serenity, listening and watching the natural ebb and flow of the Sound. Here you can also enjoy a special visit from Jonathan Livingston Seagull. And during different seasons you can view other wildlife such as seals, blue fish, cormorants, and more.
Truly lucky patrons will be there on a day when bartender Bob Scott is fishing right off the side of the deck. Many people had a blast the day they were able to watch him reel in a large striped bass.
For larger events, Michele Hamilton is the restaurant's tireless manager who takes care of all of the restaurant’s catering. The Soundview Restaurant offers an exquisite view for guests (and photos!), a wonderful menu and great service for weddings and rehearsal dinners accommodating up to 150 people.
Even though it is a lifetime of dedication and hard work, not a day goes by that Levin Murphy doesn't realize the gift she has been given. “I’m very blessed to be able to meet and talk to wonderful people all day long, work with such and incredible staff, in a place that has such great food and drink—all with our incredible view,” she said.
