Adoption Falls Through For Shelter Dog Who 'Just Wants A Person'
Poor, sad Gio — in a heartbreaking twist, his adoption fell through, and he's still searching for a forever person. Here's how to help him.

PECONIC, NY — Sometimes, dreams of a happy ending don't come true as planned.
Gio, a stray dog who is struggling after finding himself back at the shelter, learned that painful lesson this week as his much-heralded adoption to his forever human fell through.
"Unfortunately, Gio's potential adopter had not checked his apartment complex for breed restrictions and was told he cannot take Gio," said Gabrielle Stroup of the North Fork Animal Welfare League in Peconic. "Please, anyone who had expressed interest come by and see him. We really need to help him find a family. The whole staff and all the volunteers thought this was a perfect match for him, and everyone is disappointed — but we will regroup and just push to find him a home."

According to Stroup, Gio came to the shelter from another rescue group after being found as a stray."He was adopted and then sadly ended up back at the shelter when an older dog in the home would not accept him. He is not doing well at the shelter at all," she said. "He just wants a person."

After reading about Gio's plight in Patch, the public opened their hearts and not even two days later, Gio found someone who said he was initially willing to give him a forever home.
"The response has been amazing!" Stroup said. "The amount of shares, the phone calls and emails has been heartwarming. The fact that this many people are willing to take these older dogs who are not doing well in a shelter environment is just awesome to see."
Stroup hopes some of the many who have shown interest in Gio will save the day, she said, so the heartbroken dog can finally "find his human."
