Greenport.NY — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Eastern Long Island Division hosted a National Safe Boating Week kickoff ceremony on Saturday, May 16, at Mitchell Park in Greenport. The event was organized by the Southold Flotilla under the supervision of Robert Martinez, Flotilla Commander and Elizabeth Downs, Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Affairs.
The community-focused boating safety outreach brought together local elected officials, first responders, Coast Guard personnel, and members of the public to promote safe boating practices ahead of the busy summer boating season.
Throughout the day, auxiliarists engaged with attendees on the importance of boating safety, including the proper use of lifejackets and safe paddlecraft operation. Free Vessel Safety Checks were also offered to boaters attending the event.
Paddlecraft safety was an especially important topic during the program following two recent paddlecraft-related fatalities in the local area. Auxiliary members stressed the importance of wearing lifejackets at all times while on the water and being prepared before heading out.
During a ceremony held at the park, Greenport Village elected officials presented proclamations recognizing National Safe Boating Week and the ongoing public service efforts of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. They were joined by members of the Southold Town Board, the Southold Town Police Department, Greenport Fire Department, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock.
Local residents were remined according to NY State statistics the majority of boating accidents are caused by human error and that over 75% of people who drown are not wearing their lifejacket.
The ceremony also featured performances by trumpeters from Greenport High School along with traditional sea shanties, adding a nautical spirit to the event.
Educational outreach efforts such as National Safe Boating Week events, public boating safety classes, and free vessel safety examinations continue to play a vital role in helping prevent accidents and save lives on local waterways.
