NORTH FORK, NY — As the North Fork readies to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, Mattituck-Cutchogue High School students and staff members took part in a series of patriotic and inspirational events this May, district officials said.

Students participated in an America 250 Spirit Week designed to promote school spirit, student engagement, patriotism and community involvement.

Spirit week included dress-up themes, such as "Mattituck Patriotism Day," "America Through the Decades Day," "American Dream Career Day," "American Sports Day," and "Freedom Friday."

The festivities culminated in a schoolwide event to recognize one of the most significant milestones in the nation’s history — 250 years of independence, district officials said.

"We are incredibly proud of the work our vocational programs and students have undertaken as part of this celebration," said building Principal Patrick Burke. "Our fabrication team from woodshop, along with our welding classes, constructed and fabricated over 100 American flags, including the posts and assembly structures. These flags were displayed on the front lawn during our concluding ceremony, creating a powerful visual tribute to our nation’s history and our students’ craftsmanship."

The flags were symbolically placed by the school’s NJROTC program and presented during a special morning display ceremony accompanied by patriotic music performed by the marching band. In addition to the flags, the school’s carpentry students constructed a large wooden "250" display to commemorate the occasion, school officials added.

Throughout the week and during the culminating celebration, students and staff heard announcements focused on the Bill of Rights and American civic principles.

Classrooms and academic departments also embraced America 250 through curriculum-based projects and activities.

For example, physics classes completed a project focused on the mechanical engineering involved in raising an American flag; the art department created a large-scale colonial timeline mural spanning from 1776 through 2026; and the senior class created a time capsule project that was buried at the school during the concluding ceremony.

Members of the Class of 2026 reflected on their high school experiences, their hopes for the future, and the legacy they hoped to leave behind.

The time capsule, which will be opened in 25 years, "served as a symbolic reminder of the pride, memories and shared history of this graduating class during such a historic moment in the nation’s story," district officials said.

Each senior contributed a letter to their future self, along with five meaningful items, all of which were placed inside the capsule to be revisited in 25 years.

Special guest speakers also visited the building to share historical information, including representatives from the Southold American Legion Griswold-Terry-Glover Post 803, as well as faculty member and Wall of Honor recipients Mr. Gibson, Mr. Brian Janice, and Master Sergeant Ibanez.
