GREENPORT, NY — Friday, March 29, marks a special day for scores of infants born at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital — it's official Stirling Baby Day.

"If you were born at Eastern Long Island Hospital, now Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, you're part of a special tradition, you're a Stirling Baby!" SBELIH wrote on social media Friday.

"The hospital welcomed its first maternity patient in 1914, beginning a legacy that would span generations of North Fork families. Although the maternity ward closed decades ago, the pride and connection shared by Stirling babies remain a cherished part of our community's history," SBELIH said.

In recognition of that enduring legacy, then-Greenport Village Mayor David Kapell proclaimed May 29 as "Stirling Baby Day" during ELIH's 100th Anniversary celebration in 2004, hospital officials said.

"Today, we honor the thousands of babies born here and the families whose stories are woven into the history of our hospital," SBELIH, which posted archival photos from the 1940s and 1950s, said.
