Baby Deer Rescued By Southold Town Public Safety Dispatcher, Honored For 'Compassion, Willingness To Step In'

SOUTHOLD, NY — A fawn found alone on Main Road in Southold was rescued recently by an off-duty Southold Town Police Department employee with a heart of gold.

According to Southold Town police, on June 3, officers responded to a report of a baby deer found alone along Main Road in Southold, appearing to be separated from its mother.

Responding officers contacted off-duty Public Safety Dispatcher Tracey Carragher, a certified New York State Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife rehabilitator, who responded and determined that the mother was no longer in the area and the fawn needed to be cared for, police said.

Dispatcher Carragher safely removed the fawn and will care for it until it is healthy and ready to be released back into the wild, police said.

"We are proud to recognize Dispatcher Carragher for her compassion and willingness to step in both on and off duty to help protect the wildlife in our community," police said.
