NORTH FORK, NY — A Pennsylvania woman was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after crashing a two-wheeled motor vehicle on Shelter Island, police said.
According to Southold Town police, Alexa Noelle Dematteis, 31, of Apollo, PA, was arrested on June 20 and charged with aggravated DWI — operating a motor vehicle with .18 BAC or higher, first offense. She was also charged with moving from lane unsafely, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate, having no motorcycle helmet, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and inadequate motorcycle lights, police said.
Dematteis was arrested after an investigation into a single-vehicle accident where an electric-powered, two-wheeled motor vehicle left the roadway, causing her to be ejected, police said.
She was treated and transported to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital by Shelter Island town EMS, where she was treated for minor injuries, police said.
She was later released on a field appearance ticket directing her to appear at Shelter Island Justice Court on a later date, police said.
Police explained that the vehicle in question did not meet the definition of an e‑bike or e‑scooter.
"Its speed capability exceeds the limits established for an e‑scooter, and its design lacks the foot pedals required for classification as an e‑bike," police said. "Additionally, it does not possess the required equipment or functionality to be classified as a motorcycle."
