NORTH FORK, NY — A well-loved tradition returns to the North Fork on August 9 as the Kait's Angels Poker Run & Pig Roast revs up to help those in need.
Kaitlyn Doorhy, a past Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Queen, died tragically while away at college. She was just 20 years old.
But with the passage of time, rather than just survive, blanketed by grief and memories, Kaitlyn's parents and sister, Joe, Darla and Carly, as well as the dedicated team of volunteers who comprise Kait's Angels — a not-for-profit organization created to keep Kaitlyn's memory alive through work to help those in need in the community — have worked tirelessly to nurture her legacy.
Fundraisers, including the annual Poker Run & Pig Roast, are held to keep Kaitlyn's light shining strong.
This year, the Kait's Angels Poker Run & Pig Roast will be held at the Breeze Hill Farm and Preserve, located 31215 County Road 48 in Peconic. Check in is at 10 a.m., with departure slated for 11 a.m. The last car/bike will be due in at 2:30 p.m.
The event will include "poker, pipes, pork and prizes," organizers said. The first 100 tickets sold will receive a free T-shirt. Best and worst hands win.
Admission costs $40 per person and $50 at the location and includes poker cards, food and beverages.
"The Kait's Angels Poker Run & Pig Roast is more than just a day of food and fun," said Darla Doorhy, Kaitlyn's mother. "It's the community coming together to ride for the Angels. It is the heartbeat of our nonprofit's fundraising efforts."
Funds raised will be used to help those in need in the community, Doorhy said. "Every dollar raised stays right here on the North Fork, helping local individuals and families facing difficult times," she said.
Doorhy thanked the "generosity of our Platinum Sponsor, the Pia family at Breeze Hill Farm & Preserve, for the venue."
She also thanked LifeVac, the event's Gold Sponsor.
In addition, Doorhy expressed gratitude to "all our amazing sponsors, volunteers, and donors. Because of you, we are able to provide support to those in need and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our North Fork neighbors."
The event, she added, "brings our community together with a shared purpose — helping one another. Whether you ride, attend, volunteer, sponsor, or donate, you become part of something bigger — a community that cares and stands together when people need it most."
And, said Doorhy: "Your support doesn't just make this event a success. It provides hope, assistance, and compassion to the people right here on the North Fork. Together, we are strengthening the North Fork — one act of kindness, one donation, and one neighbor at a time."
Her beautiful daughter believed in giving back, Doorhy said. "Kaitlyn always said that God gave us two hands — one to do for ourselves, and the other, to help others."
Participants can drive whatever they choose, Doorhy said. Anyone with a motorcycle, classic car, souped up semi, tricked out Toyota, or pimped out Prius is welcome, Kait's Angels members said. "If it moves, you can play," organizers said. "Drive whatever you own."
The ride goes on, rain or shine.
