Man Charged With DWI After Shelter Island Motorcycle Crash: Police

He sustained minor injuries, police say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A Shelter Island man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a motorcycle crash, police said.

According to Shelter Island police, the incident took place on Friday at 7:16 p.m.

William Orlando Salazar-Hernandez, 28, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with .08 percent or more of alcohol, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, police said.

Subsequent to an investigation into the crash on North Cartwright Road, Salazar-Hernandez was found to exhibit multiple indicators consistent with intoxication, placed under arrest, and charged with DWI, police said.

Shelter Island Town EMS responded to the scene, but he refused medical assistance for minor injuries sustained in the crash, police said.

He was held overnight pending arraignment and later appeared before the Shelter Island Justice Court, where he was released on his own recognizance and directed to return on a future court date, police said.
