LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Islanders will see another day of high temperatures Saturday — a heat advisory is now slated to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday across the region.
Heat index values up to 101 degrees are expected, the NWS said.
Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, the NWS said.
A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time, the NWS said.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk, the NWS said.
Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures; residents should use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning, the NWS said.
Those without home air conditioning are advised to continue to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after homes are still hot, the NWS said.
Residents should also check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors, the NWS said.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments, the NWS said.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, the NWS said.
"Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 911," the NWS said.
An air quality alert also remains in effect until 11 p.m. Friday, the NWS said.

A slight chance of showers between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m.. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Heat index values as high as 98. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Saturday night
A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 75. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Sunday
Sunny, with a high near 90. West wind 5 to 9 mph.
Sunday night
Mostly clear, with a low around 73.
