House Fire On Shelter Island Wednesday Believed To Have Been Sparked By Lightning: Police

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A fire broke out early Thursday morning at a home on Shelter Island, police said.

According to Shelter Island police, the blaze was reported at 6:29 a.m. at a home on Tuthill Drive.

The Shelter Island police, fire, and EMS departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a single-family residence on Shelter Island, police said.

The two occupants of the home safely evacuated prior to the arrival of first responders, police said.

The Shelter Island Fire Department rapidly contained and extinguished the fire, with additional support provided by the Greenport Fire Department and the Sag Harbor Fire Department, police said.

Shelter Island EMS evaluated both occupants as a precaution and remained on standby throughout firefighting operations, police said.

The Shelter Island Police Department initiated an on-scene investigation into the cause and origin of the fire, police said.

While the investigation remains active, preliminary findings indicate the incident was believed to be storm-related, potentially connected to overnight lightning activity, police said.

At this time, the case is believed to be non-criminal, police said.
