LONG ISLAND, NY — Labor Day weekend is traditionally the farewell to summer, with families soaking up the last rays of sunshine during backyard barbecues and lazy beach days.

But will the soggy skies across Long Island clear up in time for the three-day holiday weekend? Here's the Labor Day weekend forecast so far from the National Weather Service.

Wednesday night

A slight chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 a.m. Low around 65. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday

Showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. High near 82. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday night

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

Friday

A 20 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

Mostly clear, with a low around 63. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Sunny, with a high near 77 to 80, with higher temps heading toward western Long Island.
