GREENPORT, NY — A fire broke out at Driftwood Cove in Greenport Thursday afternoon, leaving some residents displaced and one injured, officials said.

According to Greenport Fire Department Captain Elias Zamayar, the fire broke out at 2:31 p.m. at Driftwood Cove on 9th Street.

The Greenport Fire Department's Wayde Manwaring was chief in charge of the call, he said; the chief arrived at the scene within minutes and confirmed a working fire, Zamayar said.

The first engine was right behind, he said. "We made entry into the apartment, finding large amounts of smoke and high heat," he said.

The fire, he said, seemed to have started in the back bedroom but after "an aggressive interior attack, we got a good knockdown on all the fire and we were just left with smoke and heat in the attic space."

He added: "Luckily, with fast action and help from the Southold Fire Department, we were able to stop the fire from spreading to any other apartments," he said.

Zamayar said anyone living in that section of the apartment complex was displaced and that the Red Cross was rendering aid.

One resident was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, he said, adding that no other injuries were reported.

Manwaring said he went to the hospital with the individual, adding that the other four residents were displaced and the Red Cross set up temporary placement for them.

The village shut power off to the building so no one could return after, he said.

According to a report by the Suffolk Times, five people were displaced and three units were condemned pending an investigation.
