LONG ISLAND, NY — As Hurricane Isaias, a Category 3 storm, barrels toward the Gulf Coast and readies for landfall, Long Islanders can expect to see impacts in the area on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
According to Brian Ciemnecki, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, rain will move into the area across Long Island from late morning on Sunday and on through the mid-to-late afternoon, with periods of possibly heavy rain through Sunday night.
That rain may continue to continue into Monday, depending upon how quickly the system exits the region, Ciemnecki said.
Rainfall amounts of about 1 inch are currently expected, with wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour at their peak; gusts of about 20 to 25 mph are expected across Long Island for most of Sunday, he said.
But the Columbus Day weekend won't be a complete washout, Ciemnecki said. Saturday is expected to be dry and sunny, with temperatures in the 60s.
"It will be really pleasant on Saturday," he said.
That fair weather could continue into the first half of Sunday, which will be mostly dry until the precipitation beings to move into the area by late morning and into the afternoon, when periods of rain, sometimes heavy, are expected, he said.
