Bicyclist Dies After Shelter Island Accident: Police

Police have identified the man who died after a bicycle accident on Shelter Island Sunday.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A bicyclist who was seriously injured in an accident on Shelter Island Sunday has died, police said.

According to Shelter Island Police, Matthew H. Mann, 38, of St. Petersburg, Florida died after the accident, which took place at 10:31 p.m. on South Menantic Road.

Mann, who had been riding an electric bike, was found unconscious in the roadway, authorities said. He was initially in "extremely critical" condition as the result of severe head trauma from the fall, police said. He died on Tuesday at 11:59 p.m., police said.

Shelter Island Town EMS took Mann to the Westmoreland Airport where a Suffolk County helicopter airlifted him to Stony Brook University Hospital trauma center, police said.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the circumstances of Mann's death, police said.
