U.S.C.G Auxiliary Hosting National Safe Boating Week Boating EventMay 16-22, 2026

Greenport N.Y.– United Staties Coast Guard Auxiliary Southold Flotilla is proud to sponsor a boating safety event to promote National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22. This is the official launch of the 2026 Safe Boating Campaign. This campaign aims to promote, in part, the value of wearing of life jackets by recreational boaters.

This event will take place at Mitchell Park, 115 Front St, Greenport, NY 11944, from 10AM to 3PM (rain cancels). Activities to promote safety on the water will include paddelcraft & safety equipment, knot tying, and life ring toss. Free vessel safety checks will be given on the water in Greenport Harbor.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three out of every four recreational boating fatalities in 2024, and that 87 percent of those who drowned were NOT wearing life jackets.

The NY State Annual Report reflects that the most common cause of accidents is collision between boats.“With over 60,0000 registered recreational vessels in Suffolk County, boaters must be constantly aware of what is happening,” said Andrew Tarantino, Division Commander, Eastern Long Island. “Auxiliary safety classes point out the changes in the laws, as well as best practices to keep boating safe and fun.”

Learn what changes have been made to regulations regarding fire extinguishers and personal flotation devices.
