Car Careens Into Home On North Fork: Fire Department

There was "significant structural damage" to the home, fire officials say.

MATTITUCK, NY — A car careened into a North Fork home this week, the Mattituck Fire Department said.

According to the MFD, on Monday night at around 7:45 p.m., during the department's weekly Monday night training at headquarters, a call came in about the car crashing into a Sound Avenue home.

Upon arrival, Chief Bobby Haas reported to incoming fire officials that there was a single car that had left the road and struck the house, causing significant structural damage to the house. The driver self-extricated, he said.

Within minutes of activation an ambulance and heavy rescue arrived at the scene; EMS personnel evaluated the driver while the crew from heavy rescue secured the vehicle and assessed the damage to the structure, fire officials said.

A short time later, an engine arrived on scene and stretched a booster line as a precautionary measure, fire officials said.

Due to the severity of the damage to the structure, the Southold Town fire marshal and Southold Town building inspector were requested to the scene, officials said.

Crews were at the scene for about 40 minutes; the scene was then turned over to the town fire marshal, officials said.Operations were under the command of Chief Bobby Haas and Asst. Chief Steve Ficner, the MFD said.
