Children Blossom In Southold School's Gardening, Literacy Camp

The new camp runs through the second week in August and is open to students in grades 1 to 6.

SOUTHOLD, NY: Southold elementary school students are blossoming at a brand-new garden and literacy camp.

Between 20 and 30 students in grades 1 to 6 are attending the new camp, which launched the first week in July at Southold Elementary School's district garden and aims to offer a unique learning experience as children engage in gardening and literacy activities.

"As an educator, I have always maintained a strong belief in order to support young readers during the summer we must create a healthy and productive environment to learn and grow — what better place than a school garden?" said Southold Schools Superintendent David Gamberg. "The opportunity to 'sustain' a school garden, which will also enhance access to quality reading and writing experiences that creates a platform to accomplish both a deeper understanding of how the garden works and promotes literacy experiences," he said.
