SOUTHOLD, NY — The community is planning to come out in force Thursday as they gather at the Southold Jr./Sr. High School gym for a "Dash For Dylan," a fundraiser for Dylan Newman, a 14-year old boy battling cancer.

The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will feature Spirit Day-type competition activities in the high school gym.

Admission costs $5; refreshments will be available and a full array of raffles is planned. All proceeds will be donated to the Newman family.

Nowhere is the love stronger for a family in need than on the North Fork — a truth that's been reflected in the many who've reached out to help Dylan, who was recently diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma.

A YouCaring page, "Team Dylan, #5" has been set up for Dylan, "a 14-year old, full of love and life. He loves his sports — especially baseball!" the page says. "He has an amazing family that loves him more than he could ever know and the greatest friends that will always have his back."

However, their family was hit with devastating news.

"This boy has been thrown a real curve ball," the page says. "Our #5 is 'In It To Win It' but will need our support."

The goal is to raise funds to help Dylan, along with his parents, Todd and Tanya, and sister Kelsey with the financial burdens they will endure as Dylan receives treatment in New York City.
